His mother was single and destitute during his birth. His father was African American. Mother Heidi gave her son to a white couple Rick and Teresa Kaepernick for adoption. The couple had previous two children a boy and a daughter but they lost two sons to heart defects and looking for a boy. Colin became the third son of the couple.
