Zainul Abedin was a famous painter of Bangladesh who helped enough to establish the Institute of Arts and Crafts (Faculty of Fine Arts) at Dhaka University. He was called a legendary Bangladeshi painter by the Indian Express.

He is best known for his painting 65 feet long Nabanna’s picture in 1970. Abedin is highly respected around the country for his outstanding contribution to the painting field.

Zainul Abedin Early Life:

Zainul Abedin was born on December 29, 1914, in Kishoreganj, East Bengal, British India (now Bangladesh). He grew up on the banks of the Brahmaputra River. His father Tamizuddin Ahmed was a sub-inspector of the police and his mother Joynabunnessa was a housewife.

He would like to paint since early childhood. At the age of 16, he escaped home and went to Kolkata with friends only to see the arts at the Government School. He completed graduation from Calcutta Government Art School in 1938.

Zainul Abedin Career:

Following the partition of India, Zainul Abedin felt a need to establish an art college in East Pakistan and eventually founded the Government Art Institute in old Dhaka in 1948 with only 18 students, this is the today’s Faculty of Fine Arts at Dhaka University.

In 1975, the government founded the Folk Art Museum at Sonargaon in Narayanganj following the demand of Zainul Abedin. Abedin was actively involved with the Bengali Language Movement and the Bangladesh liberation war.

Personal Life:

Zainul Abedin married Jahanara Abedin. He died of cancer on May 28, 1976, in Dhaka. Abedin was buried beside the Dhaka University Central Mosque. Every year his birthday is celebrated commemorating him with a festival at Dhaka University and a children’s art competition in Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin Sangrahashala.
