Tarique Rahman is a politician of Bangladesh and Senior Vice Chairman of the Bangladesh National Party (BNP). He is also known as Tarique Zia around the country, the latter part of his name is taken after his father’s name Ziaur Rahman. Tarique is the elder son of Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia. He has been criticized around the country enough for alleged corruption during the ruling period of the BNP from 2001 to 2006.

Tarique Rahman Early Life & Education:

Tarique Rahman was born on November 20, 1967, in Karachi, Pakistan to Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia. Ziaur Rahman was the 7th president of the country and the mother served as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. He studied at Dhaka Residential Model College and passed SSC from the college. Tarique passed HSC from Notre Dame College, Dhaka.

First, he enrolled at Dhaka University in Law in 1984 then shifted to the Public Administration Department of the University. But he couldn’t complete his education, dropped out from his study, picked up business as a career, and invested in the garments sector. Now, Tarique is studying Law at a University, in London.

Tarique Rahman Career:

Tarique Rahman kicked off his journey in politics being a member of his father’s established political party BNP from Bogra District in 1988.  He helped the mother Begum Khaled Zia in the 1991 National Election and their party won the election eventually Begum Khaleda Zia becomes the first female prime minister of the country. During the Awami League Government in 1996-2001, he mobilized campaigns around the country against government activities.

In 2001, Tarique emerged as an active politician in participating campaign for the National Election 2001. In the election, his party won a landslide victory over the Awami League getting a two-thirds majority. Then he worked for the party to increase its strength at the grassroots level. He visited the whole country to participate in the party’s meetings and joined more than 100 programs; gradually he became a powerful leader in the country and got huge media attention.

During the visit to Gopalganj in 2002, he visited the tomb of the father of the Bengali nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and paid respects on behalf of the Bangladesh National Party showing political tolerance.

Money Laundering Case & Arrest:

A money laundering case was filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission in June 2007, against Tarique Rahman and his friend businessman Giasuddin Al Mamun. Earlier on March 7, 2007, he was arrested in a corruption case by the acting government of Bangladesh. It is reported, he has been physically tortured after being arrested.

On September 03, 2008, he got bail from all the cases and was released from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University & Hospital under treatment. Later he moved to England for better treatment and settled in the country.

Rahman was jailed for 10 years in the Zia Orphanage Trust Case on February 8, 2018, where his mother Khaleda Zia jailed for 5 years.

21 August Grenade Attack Case:

Tarique Rahman was awarded life term imprisonment in the 21 August Grenade Attack case on October 10, 2018. It seems to be that he was the mastermind behind the deadly grenade attack on the Awami League rally on August 21, 2004, where 24 people died and hundreds were injured.

Personal Life:

Tarique Rahman married a beautiful physician Zubaida Rahman. The former Chief of the Bangladesh Navy Rear Admiral Mahbub Ali Khan is her father. Together the couple has a daughter named Zaima Rahman who is a Barrister.
