Angela Merkel is a Germany politician and first female chancellor of the country since 2005.  She is the leader of Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and one of the de facto architects of the European Union. Merkel made a history winning the election on September 24, 2017, for the fourth term. But her victory dimmed by the entry of the far-right party (AFD) into parliament having 13% vote.

Angela Merkel Early Life:

Angela Merkel was born on July 17, 1954, in Hamburg, Germany to Horst Kasner and Herlind. Her mother Herlind was an English teacher and member of Social Democratic Party. Merkel’s mother had a Poland ancestry. She has two siblings a brother and a sister. Merkel grew up in a rural area north of the Berlin and studied at a local school. Later she studied physics at the University of Leipzig and received a doctorate degree in 1978.

Angela Merkel Career:

Angela Merkel kicked off the career journey as a chemist and worked at the Central Institute for Physical Chemistry, Academy of Sciences from 1978 to 1990. Following the fall of Berlin Wall in 1989, she joined the Christian Democratic Union political party. By her astute leadership, Merkel became the Minister of the environment and nuclear safety. In 1998, she became the secretary general of the CDU.

Then she was named as party leader in 2000. In the 2002 election, her party lost to Edmund Stoiber.  In 2005, Merkel narrowly defeated Chancellor Gerhard Schoder by winning just three seats. Then formed the coalition government with the Social Democrats eventually she became the first female chancellor of Germany. Then Merkel won the three elections consecutively in 2009, 2013 and 2017.

Personal Life:

Angela Merkel married Ulrich Merkel a physics student in 1977 at 23 years old. After nearly five years together they called it over in 1982 and got divorced. On December 30, 1998, she married chemist and Professor Joachim Sauer again secretly. The couple is first seen together in 1981. She has no children but two sons by her first marriage.
