Her elder sister Mamta was an actress while her brother was an Indian Aircraft Maintenance Technical officer. She received her graduation degree in Philosophy from Pune University.

Urmila Matondkar made her film debut as a child artist with Marathi movie ‘Zaakol’ in 1980. Then she appeared in several movies as a child actress and got popularity including ‘Kalyug’ and ‘Masoom’. The actress kicked her career journey as an adult actress with action movie ‘Narsimha’ directed by N. Chandra in which she played the lead role Meenu with Sunny Deol, Dimple Kapadia and Ravi Behi in 1991. The movie was hit at the box office.
