She is the daughter of prominent filmmaker Shomu Mukherjee and actress Tanuja Samarth as well as the younger sister of elegant Bollywood actress Kajol and sister-in-law Ajay Devgan. Her cousins Rani Mukherjee, Mohnish Behl and Sharbani Mukherjee are actors while Ayan Mukherjee is a director.
Tanishaa’s paternal grandfather Sashadhar Mukherjee was a prominent film director and producer. Ashok Kumar, Kishore Kumar and Anup Kumar who are the three great personalities of Indian films are the sons of her grandmother Satirani Devi. Deb Mukherjee and Joy Mukherjee are her uncles.

Tanishaa Mukherjee made her film debut in Bollywood with horror thriller movie ‘Sssshhh…’ directed by Pawan Kaul in 2003. In the movie, she acted as Mehek Gujral along with Karan Nath and Dino Morea where her performance was appreciable and the movie did average business. Nest year, she appeared in the movie ‘Popcorn Khao! Mast Ho Jao’ as Tania.
In 2005, the actress starred in three movies ‘Tango Charlie’, ‘Sarkar’ and ‘Neat N Nikki’. Tanishaa entered into Tamil film with director Jeeva’s musical romantic movie ‘Unnale Unnale’ in which she played the lead role opposite Vinay Raid.
