His two brothers Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor both are an actor. Notable celebrity of the Bollywood Karisma Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor comes from the family. Shashi studied at Don Bosco High School in Mumbai. He started acting as a child actor when he was only 4 years old.

Shashi Kapoor married English actress Jennifer Kendal in July 1958 whom met in Calcutta in 1956 during working in the theater group. In 1984, Kendal died of cancer. The couple together had three children named Kunal Kapoor, Karan Kapoor and Sanjana Kapoor. The legendary actor died of chronic illness on December 4, 2017, in Versova, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.
